I am changing my motherboard memory and CPU and I want to take my Windows 10 upgrade with me. I previously had a retail copy of Windows 7. I will be using the same C drive but ought to do a clean install and I don't forsee any licensing issues especially if I uninstall my product key first.
The problem is that the parts may arrive after the day the free upgrade ends. I am a member of the Insider Preview. can I install the Insider Preview version if I can't get a free upgrade?
I have read that even if you have a retail version of Windows 7 or 8 after 29 July Windows 10 will be activated to the last device that was upgraded before 29th. So if you clean install before 29th July and (on a new device) then you can use your Windows 7 key and it will activate by digital entitlement. After the 29th July the free upgrade is no longer available so you cannot install to a new device after the 29th. (this was a UK computer magazine and I would have thought they had checked with MS)
Now, I have also read on here posts that suggest retail key will have the same rights in Windows 10 as was in Windows 7 or 8. But there were no references to the source of that statement.
It does seem to me that for MS to offers a year of free upgrade and then let it continue for retail customers would be against their business model.
The only MS page I've seen about digital entitlement is the link in the Activation screen on Windows 10.

The question is if I have already used my Windows 7 full retail to upgrade to Windows 10, and I cancel the key using slmgr -upk , have I acquired the right to reinstall that on my new build and have Windows 10 activated?
It hardly seems fair to withdraw the right to use it simply because you have updated your hardware.

You can install Windows 10 on the replaced new PC if you either have already upgraded to Windows 10 before 29th July 2016 or if you have the Windows 7 valid key.
So do not worry about installation of Windows 10 if you qualify for it.

Hi....This means that you need to reinstall Windows 7 again on your new machine and then 'Upgrade' to Windows 10....however I'm not sure if you may only need your Microsoft account {if it was registered in your old machine}. I did a clean install on a 'Non Windows 10' machine and it activated... mind you though I am an Insider. so

If it is a retail key you would have to call Microsoft to transfer your license before July 29. If it is an OEM key it stays with your existing system. To get the free upgrade you would have to upgrade by July 29. After July 29 it would be $119.00 for
Windows 10 Home or $199.00 for Windows 10 Pro (U.S.)
